Today’s nuclear industry is undergoing dramatic change. It is being reinvigorated by dozens of new entrants, large and small. Each brings with it new reactor designs that promise to make nuclear power cheaper, safer, and cleaner. Today’s nuclear entrepreneurs see nuclear power not as a danger to the environment, but as an essential tool in the fight against climate change.
However, participants in this growing field encounter what seems an impenetrable wall of laws and regulations, tempering the hopes of even the most optimistic engineer. But Hogan Lovells’ nuclear team has helped many first-of-a-kind projects in the nuclear industry, proposed by both large and small companies, move from the drawing board to the control room. We have assisted companies in technical conferences at the NRC, in understanding DOE and DOC export control programs, in developing IP management strategies, in crafting vendor contracts and partnership agreements, in attaining public and private financing, and more. We have seen many of the challenges that exist along the way, and are personally invested in seeing them overcome, for the sake of the public and the planet.
This blog serves as a means by which to share thoughts and insights, update the community on recent legal or regulatory changes, and help companies avoid common pitfalls. Our focus is on “advanced” reactors broadly defined (including both small modular and non-light water reactors) and related technologies, but we also cover at times important stories that affect the entire industry. This is a passion project meant to follow reader interests, so please do not hesitate to contact the authors below with questions or suggestions. Thank you for reading, and we hope to hear from you soon.
